TL;DR: What did Sam Altman say about RAM?
On the Cheeky Pint podcast with Stripe co-founder John Collison, published on 29 October 2026, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said it is "quite terrible", from a global allocation view, for everybody to keep part of the world's limited DRAM supply in their own computer, used about 5% of the time. His fix: maximum utilization in cloud data centers. Critics point out that OpenAI's own buying helped cause the memory shortage. For founders the remark matters less than the market behind it: DRAM contract prices are still rising (TrendForce forecasts 10-15% for conventional DRAM in 4Q26), SK hynix expects demand to beat supply through 2030, and laptops and servers keep getting dearer.
A lot of people want local inference. And somehow, they assume that the problem is solved now. Because, we are going to have open-source models. We're going to be able to run them on our computers. And so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data center. But from a global allocation perspective, actually, it's quite terrible to have everybody have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer. And, being used... 5% of the time. You want maximum utilization in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply constrained environment.
