Claude Max 20x Is Now Ultra: What $200 Really Buys, Why "20x" Was Always 10x a Week, and Who Loses the Five-Hour Limit

TL;DR: What is the Claude Ultra plan?

On 30 October 2026, Anthropic renamed Claude Max 20x to Ultra and Max 5x to plain Max. Prices didn't change: Max is $100 a month and Ultra is $200. Ultra gives you 10 times Pro's usage every week, $200 a month in Claude API credits, and no five-hour limit once Anthropic has verified your account. The new name also admits something: the old "20x" only ever described the five-hour window, while the weekly allowance was 10x. If the five-hour wall stops your coding sessions, Ultra is now the only Claude plan that removes it.
If you build with Claude Code, you've hit the wall: deep in a refactor, the session limit kicks in, and you wait. For a solo founder that's not an inconvenience, it's lost shipping time. Last week Anthropic changed the plan that most heavy Claude Code users pay for, and it removed that wall for some of them.
It also quietly corrected the name. Here's what Ultra actually gives you for $200, who keeps the five-hour limit, what the API credits cover, and how to decide which plan your startup needs.

What happened

On Friday 30 October 2026, Anthropic's Claude account posted on X: "We're renaming our Max plans: Max 5x → Max, Max 20x → Ultra. Max is still $100/month, and Ultra is still $200. If you're a subscriber, there's nothing you need to do." The same post said Anthropic was "removing the 5-hour limit for verified Ultra accounts, starting today with most existing" subscribers.
The Help Center page on the Ultra plan confirms it: "The Max 20x plan is now called the Ultra plan. Existing Max 20x subscribers move to Ultra automatically, with no price change." Ultra "includes 10 times the Pro plan's usage every week and has no five-hour limit, for verified accounts."
Two things changed, and one perk moved to the front:
  • New names. Max 5x is now just Max ($100). Max 20x is now Ultra ($200). Pro ($20) stays the same.
  • No five-hour limit on verified Ultra. You work against a weekly limit only. Max and Pro keep both limits.
  • API credits in the headline. Ultra keeps the $200 a month in API credits that Max 20x got on 7 October, and the Claude pricing page now lists it as "$200 a month in API credits, up from $100 on Max".
Status: this is live and confirmed on Anthropic's own pages. Rollout of the five-hour change is gradual, and new accounts wait for verification.

Why "20x" became 10x: the name finally matches the meter

This is the part most coverage skipped. According to Japanese tech site TechnoEdge, Mike Overell, the product lead for Claude subscriptions, explained that Max 20x launched in April 2025, when the five-hour window was the only limit. Back then the plan really gave you 20 times Pro's usage. The weekly limit came later, and it was set at 10 times Pro, not 20. Overell apologised for the confusion, TechnoEdge reported.
So if you bought Max 20x expecting 20 times Pro's weekly work, you never had it. The new pricing page now spells out the weekly number for every plan, and the Max plan page says Max gives "five times the Pro plan's usage every five hours and every week."
Do the maths and a pattern jumps out. Pro at $20 is one unit of weekly usage. Max at $100 is five units. Ultra at $200 is ten. That's $20 per unit on every monthly plan (our calculation from the pricing page). Bigger plans don't make usage cheaper. You pay for fewer interruptions, the API credits and, on Ultra, the missing five-hour limit. The one discount is Pro billed yearly, at $17 a month.

Who keeps the five-hour limit

Ultra's headline perk has a condition. "To help prevent fraud and abuse, we automatically verify Ultra accounts using factors like your account and payment history," the Help Center says. Until then, "a temporary limit applies", and Anthropic removes it on its own. You can't speed it up: "Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and doesn't remove this limit."
  • How to check. Go to Settings → Usage. If you don't see a "Current session" bar, your account is verified.
  • The weekly cap stays. Ultra has a weekly limit across all models and a separate weekly limit for Fable.
  • The small print. Anthropic says it "may limit your usage in other ways, such as weekly and monthly caps or model and feature usage, at our discretion. We don't guarantee uninterrupted service."
Translation for founders: "no five-hour limit" means you can burn your week in two long days if a launch needs it. It doesn't mean unlimited. If you just upgraded with a new account, plan for the five-hour limit to stay for a while.

The API credits: what $200 a month actually covers

Max and Team plans have included monthly API credits since 7 October, which we covered in our October AI price war roundup: $100 a month on Max 5x and $200 on Max 20x. Ultra keeps the $200. Anthropic's help page on the monthly API credits is clear that this money is for building your own product, not for coding sessions:
Covered by the API creditsNot covered
Claude API (Messages and Message Batches)Interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web
The Playground in the Claude ConsoleExtra usage after you hit your plan's limits
Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDKClaude on Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or Microsoft Foundry

The rules worth knowing before you claim:
  • Seven days first. You can claim after seven days on an eligible plan. Free, Pro and Enterprise don't qualify.
  • One organization, chosen once. You link one Claude Console organization, and you can't change it yourself later. Pick the one your product lives in.
  • Use it or lose it. Credits don't roll over. They're spent before any credits you bought, and everyone with an API key in that organization draws from the same balance.
  • No surprise bill. If the credits run out and you have no other credits, API requests stop until next month. Usage is never charged to your Claude plan.
OpenAI went the same way on 28 October, when it started giving ChatGPT Pro subscribers up to $500 a month in API credits, as we explained in our post on ChatGPT Pro API credits. Both vendors are now paying power users to build on their platforms.

The same week, Claude Code also got stricter

Ultra loosened one limit, but Anthropic tightened Claude Code elsewhere. Around 27 October, a new rule appeared in Claude Code's instructions: "Do not build a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original." Game Developer reported that Anthropic pointed to a statement by Addy Osmani, a member of its technical staff: "We added two sentences to Claude Code's prompt on Opus 5.5 to steer it away from recreating someone else's specific game because using Claude to infringe IP is against our usage policy."
Osmani added that "Original games, genre games, and games built from your own designs and assets are meant to keep working." For most founders this changes nothing. The lesson is bigger, though: the vendor can change what your coding agent will and won't do with a server-side update, and you'll hear about it on X, not in your inbox.

Why this matters: AI costs are the new rent

On 2 November, TechCrunch reported that Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan told Walter Isaacson's podcast: "I spend about maybe $100[,000] to $200,000 a year on tokens." Even Tan said agents are "too expensive right now".
You're not spending $200,000. But the direction is the same for a two-person startup: AI is becoming a fixed monthly cost, like rent, and the plans are being reshaped every few weeks. In the same week Anthropic renamed its plans, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT and Codex will share one usage limit from December, which we unpacked in our post on the ChatGPT and Codex shared limit. And as our analysis of why AI token bills keep rising shows, agent workloads grow faster than anyone budgets for.

The Europe angle

Anthropic's pricing page says "Prices shown don't include applicable tax", so European buyers pay VAT on top of $100 or $200 at checkout. TechnoEdge noted that in Japan, with 10% tax, Max comes to $110 and Ultra to $220. Expect your own country's rate on top, and remember that mobile subscriptions can be priced differently from the web.
Two practical points. First, Max and Ultra are monthly only, so there's no annual discount to lock in. Second, if you're switching from an annual Pro plan, you'll only get a credit for your remaining balance if your new plan uses the same billing address. If your company has moved country, sort that out before you upgrade.

What this means for you

  1. Find out which limit actually stops you. Open Settings → Usage during a normal week. If the five-hour bar stops you but your weekly bar has room, Ultra solves your problem. If your weekly bar runs out, you need more total usage, and Ultra gives you exactly 2x Max.
  2. Don't upgrade expecting a volume discount. Every monthly plan costs $20 per Pro unit of weekly usage. Upgrade for flow, the API credits and fewer interruptions, not for cheaper tokens.
  3. Claim the API credits now. If you're on Max or Ultra, link a Console organization in Settings → Billing and point your product's API key at it. $100 to $200 a month covers a lot of prototyping. Our guide to evaluating AI tool ROI helps you decide what that money should build.
  4. Keep Claude Code and your product's API usage separate. The credits don't cover interactive Claude Code, and your plan's limits don't pay for your app's API calls. Track them as two budgets.
  5. Treat plan terms as moving targets. Anthropic reserves the right to add "weekly and monthly caps" at its discretion, and its own IPO filing lists rate limits as a risk, as we covered in our breakdown of the S-1 risk factors.
  6. Have a plan B. Know what a second coding tool would cost you for one month. Our AI tool stack for solo founders lists alternatives, and we track every change in our AI news for November 2026.
My take: the rename is good news dressed as a branding exercise. Anthropic fixed a misleading name, removed the limit that hurts builders most, and kept the $200 API credit, all without raising the price. But read it for what it is: there's no discount at the top, the five-hour freedom depends on a verification you can't control, and every cap still sits "at our discretion". Pay for Ultra if the five-hour wall is costing you shipping days. Otherwise, Max plus a disciplined week is still the smarter spend.

FAQ: Claude Ultra and the Max plan rename

What is the Claude Ultra plan?

Ultra is the new name for Claude Max 20x since 30 October 2026. It costs $200 a month, gives 10 times Pro's usage every week, includes $200 a month in API credits and has no five-hour limit for verified accounts.

Is Claude Ultra 20 times Pro?

No. Anthropic says Ultra includes "10 times the Pro plan's usage every week". The old "20x" referred to the five-hour window when the plan launched in April 2025, before the weekly limit existed.

Did Claude Max get more expensive?

No. Max (formerly Max 5x) is still $100 a month and Ultra (formerly Max 20x) is still $200. Existing subscribers moved over automatically with no price change.

How do I know if my Ultra account is verified?

Go to Settings → Usage. If you don't see a "Current session" bar, your account is verified and has no five-hour limit. Anthropic verifies accounts automatically using account and payment history; phone verification doesn't remove the limit.

Can I use the Claude API credits for Claude Code?

Not for interactive Claude Code in the terminal, IDE, desktop or web. The credits cover the Claude API, the Console Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, including claude -p run with an API key from your linked Console organization.

Do Claude Pro subscribers get API credits?

No. Monthly API credits are only on Max ($100), Ultra ($200) and Team plans. Free, Pro and Enterprise plans aren't eligible.
