TL;DR: Did AI really disprove the Exponential Time Hypothesis?
On 26 and 27 October 2026, OpenAI and Anthropic each published a proof, found by their own AI models, that the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH) is false. ETH, proposed by Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi in 1999, says the classic 3-SAT puzzle needs exponential time. Both papers give a deterministic algorithm that beats that bound, and both come with machine-checked proofs in the Lean language. The three researchers leading the open review say their role is no certification, and no flaw had been reported by 2 November. For your product nothing changes today: Anthropic's paper says the algorithm only beats brute force on formulas with more than 10^108 variables, and OpenAI told TechCrunch it is reasonably confident no encryption breaks follow.
Developing story. Last updated 2 Nov 2026, 07:45 CET. Still no verdict; follow-up results and independent Lean reruns are now coming in (see the update below). We'll update this article as the review group led by Impagliazzo, Paturi and Ryan Williams publishes its findings.
