Reddit Goes Login-Only After Losing Over 1 Million Google Referrals a Week, and Its CEO Says AI Mode 'Does Not Drive Traffic'. What Founders Who Get Found on Reddit Should Do Now

TL;DR: Why is Reddit going login-only, and what does it mean for founders?

On 29 October 2026, Reddit told shareholders that its Google search referrals fell "by more than 1 million referrals on average per week" in October, and that it will shift to a logged-in-only experience, starting with tests "in select markets outside the U.S." in Q4. CEO Steve Huffman said on the earnings call: "The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic." A day earlier, Google admitted "lower monetization" in AI Mode and expanded AI Mode ads to 10 more countries, with the UK next. If Reddit is part of how customers find you, move your best Reddit content and readers onto channels you own now, before the login wall reaches your market.
Reddit has been the free marketing channel of bootstrapped founders for years. You answer a question in the right subreddit, the thread ranks on Google, and strangers find your product for months. Plenty of people add "reddit" to their Google searches for exactly that reason: they want answers from real humans.
This week, both halves of that machine changed. Reddit says Google is sending it far fewer visitors, and it plans to put most of the site behind a login. Google says its AI answers make it less money than classic search, and it is selling ads inside them anyway. Here's what was announced, what the numbers show, and what I'd do now.

What happened

Reddit published its Q3 2026 results on 29 October. Its shareholder letter is unusually blunt about Google. "Our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter," it says, and the biggest hit was to logged-out and web traffic. "These declines have continued into the early part of Q4. During October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week."
The same letter announces the fix: "a key piece of work to retain new audiences is shifting Reddit to a logged-in-only experience." Reddit says it will "begin fully testing this in select markets outside the U.S." in Q4, and that the results "will inform an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally." It adds: "Pretty much all of the major ad-based platforms have gone through this transition."
On the earnings call, Huffman went further, as The Verge reported: "The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody, as far as I know. That's just a fundamental shift in how Google works. It used to be a traffic driver, now it's not." He said AI Overviews and AI Mode push "everyone down the search page", and that Reddit believes its machine-translated content now ranks lower, which mainly hurts Reddit outside the US.
He also said Reddit is still a "top search term in Google" and that Google is "crawling us as hard as ever". In his words: "It says Google is not sending them to Reddit the way they used to."

Why Reddit wants everyone logged in

Huffman gave four reasons, according to The Verge's report on the login plan: a login requirement is "better for user experience, better for our ads business, is more in line with safety regulations, and more protective of Reddit data." The "vast majority" of unauthorized access to Reddit happens through logged-out pages, he said. Reddit will keep licensing its data to companies, as it did with OpenAI and Google in 2024.
Reddit says it doesn't need to know who you are, only that you're logged in. "Honestly, we don't want to know," Huffman said. It is also rebuilding the app's incognito mode. There is no date for a global rollout, and Reddit hasn't said what a logged-out visitor who clicks a shared link will see.
The money logic is simple. App users and logged-in users already make up "over 80% of the monetization on Reddit", Huffman said. Logged-out readers who arrive from Google, read one thread and leave earn Reddit little. Huffman called it "a big change for Reddit, where we've allowed logged-out access to basically all of Reddit for the last two decades."

Reddit's Q3 numbers

The business is growing fast even as Google traffic falls. Q3 revenue was $895.0 million, up 53% year on year, net income was $283.3 million, and adjusted EBITDA was $402.3 million. International revenue grew 67%, faster than US revenue at 50%. For Q4, Reddit expects revenue of $1,000 million to $1,030 million.

Look at the biggest cell: 49.5 million logged-out daily users outside the US, up 33% in a year. That's the group a login test "outside the U.S." touches first, and it includes the people who land on a Reddit thread from a Google search in Germany, France or the Netherlands. Reddit itself warns that total daily users "could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million." At 10%, that's about 13 million fewer daily users (our calculation).

Google's side: AI Mode pays less, and it's getting ads

Google reported its own Q3 a day earlier. Search revenue rose 12% to $63.25 billion, slower than a year before, and chief business officer Philipp Schindler blamed the slowdown on "lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode," as The Register reported. Alphabet shares fell by almost 10% that day.
Google's answer is more ads in AI answers. On 28 October it said in its Google Ads blog that ads in AI Mode are scaling in Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. In Q4 2026 it plans to add Brazil, Mexico and the United Kingdom, and it is launching ads in follow-up questions in the US. No EU country is named.
Google also says AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than classic searches, and that sponsored and organic product listings in AI Mode get similar click-through rates. That second claim comes from Google's internal US data, so treat it as Google's view. We covered Google's promise of more links in AI answers in Google puts more links in AI Mode. Reddit's numbers suggest those links haven't made up the difference, at least for Reddit.
It fits what smaller sites have been measuring all month. In this month's AI search traffic studies, ChatGPT sent just 0.62% as much traffic as Google organic across 100 sites. AI answers are where people search now. They're just not where people click. For the rest of the month's search news, see our SEO news for October 2026.

The Europe angle

Reddit hasn't named its test markets. It only says "outside the U.S.", and 61% of its daily users are there (our calculation: 79.6 million of 130.3 million). European founders should assume their market could be in the first wave. If it is, a German or Dutch visitor who lands on a Reddit thread from Google may hit a login screen instead of the answer.
Huffman's point about machine translation matters here too. Reddit translates posts into other languages, and he believes Google ranks those versions lower. That hits non-English markets hardest. Meanwhile, Google's AI Mode ads arrive in the UK in Q4, while EU countries aren't on Google's list yet.

What this means for you

  1. Measure your Reddit dependence this week. In your analytics, check how many visitors come from reddit.com and how many come from Google searches that lead to Reddit threads about you. If either is a top-five source, you have a single point of failure.
  2. Move your best Reddit answers onto your own site. The thread that explains your product best should also live as a page you control, so it can rank and be cited even if Reddit's version goes behind a login. Our content marketing plan for the first 90 days shows how to turn answers into posts.
  3. Turn Reddit readers into your audience. Every useful comment should point to something you own: a newsletter, a free tool, a waitlist. Our guide to building a customer community covers the next step.
  4. Keep Reddit for research, logged in. Customer language, objections and pricing complaints on Reddit stay valuable. Use an account you actually log into, and don't rely on scrapers or tools that read Reddit logged-out.
  5. Stop counting on AI Mode for clicks. Track AI Overview and AI Mode visits separately where your tools allow it, and check your rankings with care, since rank-tracker data can be wrong. Plan for visibility without the visit.
  6. Earn links you own, not only threads you rent. Mentions on blogs, newsletters and partner sites don't sit behind a login. Our 15 ways to build links without a budget are a good place to start.
My take: Reddit isn't dying. It made $283 million in profit last quarter, and it's choosing logged-in users who see its ads over anonymous readers sent by Google. That's a sensible business decision for Reddit. For founders, it ends an era of free, permanent, public distribution through Reddit threads. Rented reach was always rented.

FAQ: Reddit login-only and Google AI Mode

Is Reddit going login-only?

Yes, that's the plan. On 29 October 2026, Reddit said it is shifting to a logged-in-only experience and will begin fully testing it in select markets outside the US in Q4 2026. The results will shape a global version. Reddit has not given a date for a full rollout.

Which countries will test Reddit's login requirement first?

Reddit has not named them. It only says the tests will run in select markets outside the US. Since 61% of Reddit's daily users are outside the US, European countries could be among them.

How much Google traffic has Reddit lost?

Reddit's Q3 2026 shareholder letter says that during October, search traffic dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week, after search referrals were down meaningfully in Q3.

Does Google AI Mode send traffic to websites?

Reddit's CEO Steve Huffman says it doesn't: "The reality is, AI Mode does not drive traffic." Google says it has added more links to its AI answers, but studies of smaller sites this month also found that AI search sends far fewer visits than classic Google results.

Are Google AI Mode ads available in Europe?

Not in the EU yet. On 28 October 2026, Google expanded AI Mode ads to 10 countries, including Australia, Canada and India, and said the UK, Brazil and Mexico will follow in Q4 2026. No EU country was named.

Should founders still market on Reddit?

Yes, but don't depend on it. Reddit stays useful for research and conversations with customers. Move your best answers onto your own site, collect readers into a newsletter or community, and treat Reddit traffic from Google as something that could drop.
