ChatGPT Ads Will Rewrite Your Ads and Change Your Landing Pages From 29 October Unless You Opt Out

TL;DR: Will ChatGPT Ads rewrite my ads, and how do I stop it?

Yes, unless you opt out. OpenAI is switching on "creative enhancements" for new and existing ChatGPT Ads campaigns at the end of October 2026. Once they're on, ChatGPT can rewrite your headlines and descriptions to fit each conversation, translate your ad, resize your images and send people to a different page on your website, all without showing you each version first. OpenAI's own pages give three different start dates (29, 30 and 31 October), so opt out by Wednesday 28 October if you want to be safe. You do it in Ads Manager under Manage settings, for your whole account or per campaign. Under OpenAI's new Ad Tools Terms, you stay responsible for every AI-made version, including its claims about prices and results.
If you started testing ChatGPT Ads this autumn, you probably wrote your headlines carefully. You checked the price, the promise and the landing page. Next week, OpenAI starts treating that copy as a first draft.
The change is small in the interface and big in practice: one setting, switched on by default, that lets an AI write new versions of your ad in real time. For a bootstrapped founder in a regulated or claim-heavy niche, that's worth ten minutes of your attention before the end of the month.

What happened

On Tuesday 20 October 2026, OpenAI emailed ChatGPT Ads advertisers. Search Engine Roundtable published the email, which says: "Starting Friday, October 30, 2026, we'll enable creative enhancements for your new and existing self-serve campaigns." Barry Schwartz noted that the setting was already showing as on in his own account.
OpenAI's help article on creative enhancements explains what that means. Enhancements "can take into consideration" the context of the conversation or user interests, your existing ad and content from your landing page. Then:
  • Headlines and descriptions: "We may create new or updated text to connect your offering to the conversation or user interests."
  • Language: "We may translate your ad text into another language."
  • Images: "Images may be resized to fit the ad format."
  • Destination URLs: "The destination URL may be optimized to direct people to a relevant page on your website."
Variations "may be prepared in advance or created in real time based on the conversation". The FAQ is blunt: "The experience does not provide a preview of every variation." Once the setting is on, enhanced ads run without your approval.
A day later, on 21 October, OpenAI expanded ChatGPT Ads to 26 more countries, bringing the total to 89. It said more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since launch "just over eight months ago". The new countries are mostly in Latin America, plus Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan. None of them are in the EU, because Europe got ads earlier.

Which date is it? OpenAI's pages disagree

Here's a detail that matters if you plan to opt out at the last minute. OpenAI has published three different start dates:
  • The advertiser email says Friday 30 October.
  • The English help article, when we read it on 23 October, said "Starting Thursday, October 31, 2026". But 31 October 2026 is a Saturday.
  • The German, Dutch and French versions of the same article say Thursday 29 October, and that date matches the weekday.
Our advice: don't gamble on the latest date. If you want the rewrites off, switch them off by Wednesday 28 October. OpenAI says you can also change the setting "at any time", so if you miss the date, switch them off as soon as you notice.

From opt-in to opt-out in five weeks

This isn't a brand new feature. On 16 September 2026, OpenAI launched what it called "the ability to opt into AI-powered text customization", which adapts an advertiser's headlines and descriptions to the conversation and translates ad copy into the user's preferred language. The difference now is the default. Advertisers who never chose it will get it unless they act. OpenAI says existing account- and campaign-level opt-outs are kept, and campaign settings take priority over the account default.
The legal side moved too. OpenAI's Ad Tools Terms, published on 21 October, say its creative tools may "generate, modify, transform, optimize, localize, translate, select, assemble, or otherwise adapt" your ads, and "automatically apply" the results to your campaign under your settings. Section 3.2 makes you responsible for every generated version applied to your campaign, including the accuracy and substantiation of claims about pricing, availability, testimonials, performance and expected results. It also puts any legally required disclosure about AI-generated content on you. Section 3.3 says OpenAI doesn't guarantee that generated creatives will be accurate, compliant with law or "consistent with your intended meaning".
In plain words: the AI writes the new version, and you carry the risk.

What can change, and what to check

ElementWhat OpenAI saysWhat to check before you leave it on
Headlines and descriptionsNew or updated text tied to the conversation or user interestsClaims, guarantees, tone and words your sector bans
LanguageAd text may be translated into another languagePrices, legal wording and promises in every language you sell in
ImagesResized to fit the ad formatLogos and text inside images that could get cropped
Destination URLMay send people to a relevant page on your websiteOld promo pages, pages without tracking or consent banners

The URL point is easy to miss. If your site still has a landing page for last year's discount, a half-finished pricing page or a page without your analytics, an AI optimising for relevance might pick it. OpenAI tells advertisers to keep prices, promotions, product details and availability current on landing pages. Our guide to building a landing page that converts is a good checklist for that clean-up.

How this compares with Google and Meta

Automatic ad rewrites aren't unique to OpenAI. Google's AI Max for Search campaigns turns on text customization, "formerly known as automatically created assets", and final URL expansion. The difference is in the controls Google documents: you can switch the two features off separately, exclude specific URLs from serving as landing pages, see headlines and URLs in the search terms report, and remove any generated asset. OpenAI's help article describes one setting and doesn't mention URL exclusions or a report of which version ran.
Meta is moving the same way. Its new Commercial Terms, which take effect on 30 October, make advertisers responsible for AI features, including ones Meta switches on. Adweek reported on 22 October that some brands pulled Meta ads after unwanted AI edits; Bookshop.org said an automated account update had opted it into a generative AI feature that added an AI illustration to its ad. We covered the crawling side of those terms in Meta's new terms and AI crawling.
Practitioners aren't all convinced the channel works yet. Among the PPC specialists Search Engine Roundtable quoted, Melissa Mackey wrote: "We ended up pausing our ChatGPT ads test due to poor lead quality." That's one voice, not a study, but it's a reason to judge ChatGPT Ads on leads and sales, not clicks.

The European angle

Europe has had ChatGPT Ads since 18 August 2026, when OpenAI announced 31 European markets, naming Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands and Austria. Self-serve access through Ads Manager opened across those markets on 31 August. So if you're a European founder, this change hits you now, not later.
RuleWhat applies in Europe
Who sees adsFree and Go users only; not accounts identified as under 18
TargetingPersonalised ads are not initially available in the EEA or Switzerland
Restricted categoriesFinancial, health and legal services ads outside the US are generally prohibited
Minimum daily budget€15, £15, CHF 20, PLN 65 or SEK 175, depending on billing currency
Suggested starting bidA maximum of $3 to $5 per click for CPC campaigns
Responsibility for AI versionsThe advertiser, under the Ad Tools Terms of 21 October

Three EU rules are worth keeping in mind:
  • Consumer law (Adopted). Under the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive, a misleading ad is the trader's problem, and OpenAI's terms leave no doubt that the trader is you. If an AI rewrite turns "from €19" into "€19" or a translation overstates a guarantee, you answer for it.
  • AI Act transparency (Adopted). The AI Act's transparency rules in Article 50 apply from 2 August 2026, and the duty to mark AI-generated content mainly falls on providers such as OpenAI. Even so, OpenAI's terms put any disclosure that the law requires of you on your side of the table.
  • Digital Services Act (Adopted). The Commission designated ChatGPT a very large online search engine on 31 August 2026, with extra obligations due by January 2027. Those include a public ad repository that records the content of each ad. How that will work for ad versions generated in real time is an open question.
Measurement is a European headache too. Without personalised targeting in the EEA, ChatGPT Ads rely on context. Tracking is also shaky: we reported earlier this month that ChatGPT referral traffic was landing in Direct after a tagging bug. If AI also changes the landing page, check that every page it might pick carries your tracking and consent setup.

What this means for you

  1. Decide before the default decides for you. Open Ads Manager, go to Manage settings and choose on or off for the account. Then check each campaign, because campaign settings override the account default.
  2. Switch it off where claims matter. If your ad mentions prices, results, guarantees, certifications or anything a regulator cares about, keep the rewrites off. The same goes for brands where tone is the product.
  3. Clean up your site. Because the AI can pick "a relevant page on your website", remove or redirect expired offers, test pages and anything you'd hate a stranger to land on.
  4. If you're curious, run a controlled test. Keep rewrites on in one campaign and off in a similar one, with conversion tracking set up. OpenAI itself warns that changes over time "do not, on their own, establish the effect of creative enhancements". Our guide to marketing attribution for startups shows how to set up a fair comparison.
  5. Keep a paper trail. Screenshot your settings and save a copy of the terms you accepted. If a rewritten ad causes a complaint, you'll want to show what you approved.
  6. Keep the budget honest. With a €15 minimum daily budget, a month-long test costs about €450. Our bootstrapped marketing budget guide helps you decide whether that beats spending the same on SEO or email.
ChatGPT is also becoming a place where people find businesses without any ad at all. Google is moving the same way, putting more links in AI Mode and AI Overviews. For more on the month's launches, see our AI news for October 2026 roundup and the SEO news for October 2026.

FAQ: ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements

What are ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements?

They are AI features that adapt your ad to each conversation. OpenAI says they can create new or updated headlines and descriptions, translate ad text, resize images and change the destination URL to another relevant page on your website. Variations can be created in real time and run without your review.

When do creative enhancements switch on?

OpenAI's pages disagree. The advertiser email says Friday 30 October 2026, the German, Dutch and French help pages say Thursday 29 October, and the English help page said Thursday 31 October, which is actually a Saturday. To be safe, opt out by Wednesday 28 October.

How do I turn off creative enhancements in ChatGPT Ads?

In Ads Manager, select Manage settings and switch creative enhancements off. You can set an account default and change it per campaign; campaign settings take priority. OpenAI says existing account- and campaign-level opt-outs are kept and that you can change the setting at any time.

Can I preview the AI versions of my ad?

No. OpenAI's help article says the experience does not provide a preview of every variation and that enhanced versions can run automatically without your approval. Ads Manager reports results at campaign, ad group and ad level.

Who is responsible if an AI-rewritten ad is wrong?

You are. OpenAI's Ad Tools Terms, published on 21 October 2026, make the advertiser responsible for all generated creatives applied to a campaign, including claims about pricing, availability and results, and say OpenAI doesn't guarantee they will be accurate or compliant with law.

Are ChatGPT Ads available in Europe?

Yes. OpenAI brought ChatGPT Ads to 31 European markets on 18 August 2026 and opened self-serve Ads Manager there on 31 August. Ads show only to Free and Go users, personalised ads are not initially available in the EEA or Switzerland, and the minimum daily budget is €15.
